Peace Education

The Teachers without Borders initiative puts forward nine guiding principles in their work, all which are relevant and necessary to consider when creating a future learning space.

Girls education

Peace education

Quake Science & Safety

Education in Emergencies

ICT in Education

Bridges to Understanding

Bullying

Child-Friendly Spaces

Legacy Projects

For the purpose of this space it has been narrowed down to focus on peace education; as TWB say “If wars begin in the human mind...…then it is through our minds – through education – that war can be vanquished by peace.”

Teachers without Borders communicates a vital concept when viewing the education of all students. It is with education and knowledge that ignorance is removed, and positive learning occurs. The more students know the more they understand and it is with this understanding that change will happen. That is why Peace Education focuses not only on the future for these kids, but the present too; providing education and schooling in a temporary living situation because it is valued enough to be run.

Kofi Anna says, “Education is a human right with immense power to transform. On its foundation rest the cornerstones of freedom, democracy and sustainable human development.” It is with his words that we recognise the importance of learning and the right all students have to access education. TWB firther this by stating, At Teachers Without Borders, we believe that teachers can lead the way towards peace in their classrooms and communities”, the responsibility is thus on the outliers, the teachers, organisations, politicians to ensure that this opportunity is given in all environments and spaces, regardless of physical conflict or location. We recognise the importance of peace education as a resource for gaining knowledge, a tool for learning and mechanism for change, particularly for refugee children as they will thrive most in a safe environment. The understanding and clarity it provides will be the catalyst for some children as they go through challenging experiences and their mental state as they are stuck in the limbo that is a refugee camp. With a war torn home, and nowhere to go, peace education provides students not only with something to do during the day, but an opportunity to improve their lives.
